Being off topic from the emulator. I figure I post this being that we all like weather. Perfect Paul as he was called. I liked the old voice much better. Personally its one of my favorite voices. I don't care for the new noaa weather radio voices. To my great surprise you can actually download a demo program called dectalk from Gw micro's website and it is the exact same voice as what was used on noaa's weather radio before they switch to the new more boring voices. Being that your all weather guys I must assume you listened to noaas radio and also can appreciate me telling everyone this. Thanks Enjoy.

Oh, And BTW, I have been following this forum for years, Just never had a need to post a message anytime recently.

Paul was kinda hard to understand. I like the new male voice but not the female voice, that one is too robotic.

I've never heard Paul on my station. There was another, really deep voice then that they now use for the station ID. I don't like the current female voice either. They use her for the marine forecast, climate data, and certain warnings. It pronounces stuff like "WAAAVES two FEET or les".

Thanks, Jeremy! Why, "Perfect Paul" was quite a celebrity. In fact, he made a Christmas album! Say whaaaaa? Well, listen for yourself!

I still hear this voice on KHB-132 (from Ruskin, FL). He is the voice that tells the current time and the station ID. smile.gif

Perfect Paul is only used here for the current time, during EAS tests, and occasionally for forecast products when the main voices are unavailable due to maintenance.

LOL! Nah, I didn't, but it is funny. Yep, "Perfect Paul" is still used for station ID's in the Chicago area.

Station ID's have been read by a human for quite awhile here, until a few years ago when the modern male voice ("Tom") started reading it.

Oh, that's Perfect Paul :lol. I didn't know he had a name!
I hear him frequently - he sounds like the Columbus and Harrisburg samples. He has a female assistant who delivers the current conditions. She's friendly, too. tongue.gif

We used to have a really weird male voice before - he was hard to understand. I would laugh every time he said the word "clear". It sounded like he was whining. blink.gif

I referred to Perfect Paul, who many people didn't find so perfect, as "Mr. Roboto." What I found ironic was that I've heard NWS personnel before on NOAA weather radio that are harder to understand than Perfect Paul.

For some, the irritation with Perfect Paul may have not really been with the voice but the fact that this was another facet of NWS operations where humans were being taken out of the equation. The modernization program closed the weather office in my city during the mid 90s. There was also the automation of weather observations.

Actually the really wierd male voice before that, the one that was harder to understand is perfect paul. Alot of NOAA weather radio listeners actually miss paul. Paul was interesting to listen to. Paul also was able to Pronounce a sentence ending with a !!!!! better than the new digital voices.

Example,
with the dectalk demo type in the following

THIS IS A DANGEROUS STORM.
Then Type in
THIS IS A DANGEROUS STORM!
You can really here the difference, Paul was state of the art back then, And to this day holds his ground. He also still does that station ID in my area. NWS of Melbourne FL.

NOAA Voice Samples
After connecting the names, yeah, Paul is the one I remember biggrin.gif. He isn't on as much anymore. I definitely hear Tom most of the time, but it is faster than the sample provided by NOAA. Donna gives the current conditions for me.

The things that Perfect Paul says for my area is the station ID and the time, as well. Donna does the weather synopsis and weather watches. Tom does basically everything else.

In my area, they always use Tom for the general forecasts, Donna for severe weather messages, and Paul for the station ID segment at the top of the hour as well as the current time. I remember hearing Paul this one time back in the summer of 2004 when the regular Tom voice wasn't working. They were useing the old Paul voice durring the intire forecast. I haven't heard Paul's voice doing the regular forecasts ever since. I also remember hearing a real human voice back in 2005, but at the time, they only used it for Child Abduction Emergencys. I haven't heard a natual human voice on the weather radio ever since.

Occasionally during severe weather, mainly floods, we would have a human voice. It kind of breaks the monotony laugh.gif.

yeah, DeKalb becomes "DeKaaaalb", reminds me of the phone sex operator from "deuce bigelow European giggalo". you would think in 2010 the government would have access to the text to speech that a $200 GPS has access to.
